Obituary

Nuala Teresa Horvath, age 91, a longtime resident of Monroe and Fairfield, passed away peacefully with family by her side,on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Jewish Senior Services in Bridgeport. She was the widow of William Paul Horvath. Born in Randalstown, Country Antrim, Northern Ireland on June 16, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Kathleen Dowd Blackham. After working for over a decade at the Gallaher Tobacco Factory, at age 25, Nuala emigrated from Belfast, Northern Ireland to the United States in 1954.  She met her beloved husband, William, after a dance at the famed Horseshoe Café in Southport.  They wed in 1963 and were married 45 years before his passing in 2008. Nuala proudly became a US citizen in 1982. She worked at Warnaco Group Inc and Monroe Public Schools for many years and retired from Harvey Hubbell Co.  A devout Roman Catholic, she was active with St. Jude Parish in Monroe and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Fairfield and was a member of the Gaelic-American Club in Fairfield. Nuala enjoyed music, dancing, Broadway shows and impromptu gatherings where she would regale stories of her childhood and life in Ireland over tea, sweets, cocktails and infinite laughs. Shehad a great love for her family, friends, and neighbors. She adored all children, the “wee ones” especially, and was happiest caring for her cherished grandsons. Nuala is survived by her three loving daughters; Kathleen Horvath of MA, Eileen Friend of CT, and Donna Toth of CT; and her four grandsons; Ryan Friend, and Jarrett, Gavin, and Brady Toth, two great granddaughters; and countless treasured nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters in Belfast; Celia Kearney, Ethna Megahy, and Kathleen O’Kane.  In addition to her devoted husband, William, Nuala is also predeceased by her siblings; John and Dominic Blackham, Muriel Austin, andRhona McCaughey, as well as her closest Irish friends, the Fleming sisters, with whom she emigrated from Ireland and considered family; Margaret Carolan, Nancy Connolly and Selina (Lallie) Fleming.
