Mary Smith

Smith- Mary Firtik Smith, age 97, of Newtown, - formally of Fairfield, passed away peacefully at Masonicare At Newtown on August 1, 2017. She was the devoted wife of the late Harry D. Smith Jr. Born in Gallitzin, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Feher Firtik Seckel. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1937, and lived in Bridgeport, Fairfield, Trumbull and Newtown, where she made her home at Masonicare in recent years, among many dear friends. During World War II Mary worked at the Aluminum Company in Bridgeport and was one of the Alcoa Alice's, the first team in the Women's Industrial Bowling League. She became a Cub Scout Den Mother and was a volunteer at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport. A bookkeeper, she worked at and retired from Rolock, Inc. of Fairfield. Mary enjoyed gardening, a good game of Pinochle and Scrabble, a hot cup of coffee, and her family. Ever the good sport, she endured family camping trips and mastered the art of cooking over an open fire in the rain. She is the beloved mother of Michael A. Smith (Brenda) of Florida, Claudia Smith Farkas (Jack) of Seymour, CT and Adrienne Smith Stanton (Lou) of North Carolina; grandchildren Kevin and Lisa Smith, Virginia Farkas Callahan, Elizabeth Farkas Brayshaw, Stephanie Farkas Gold, Christopher and Todd Stanton; and seven cherished great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and loving husband of 39 years, Mary was predeceased by her sister Virginia R. Seckel, and brothers John and William Firtik. Mary's family wishes to thank the staff of Masonicare At Newtown for the care and compassion they provided Mary throughout her stay with them, and to her family members. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial service on Monday September 18, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Larson Funeral Home, 2496 North Ave, Bridgeport. Burial will be in Lawncroft Cemetery.
